Mark Gurman of Bloomberg previews Apple’s ‘Wonderlust’ event, detailing iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro enhancements.
Gurman suggests that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models will feature a titanium chassis, which offers increased durability, a 10% reduction in weight, and a brushed finish for reduced fingerprints compared to the current stainless steel frames. The device’s edges, where metal meets glass, will have smoother, rounded contours. Additionally, both Pro models will sport larger displays with reduced bezels, approximately one-third smaller.
The A17 Bionic chip, manufactured using a pioneering 3nm process, promises improved performance and notably enhanced battery life. While the current iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max offer around 23 and 29 hours of battery life, respectively, the next-gen devices will also boast increased memory, surpassing the 6GB found in recent Pro iPhone models.
The newly introduced ‘Action Button,’ taking the place of the mute switch, offers customizable functions, enabling actions such as muting the phone, activating Focus mode, activating the flashlight, accessing the camera, initiating voice recording, launching Siri shortcuts, activating the digital magnifying glass, and opening accessibility settings.
Furthermore, the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras in the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will boast a higher megapixel count than their predecessors, exceeding 12 megapixels for the first time. Gurman also clarified that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will maintain its ‘Pro Max’ branding, dispelling previous rumors suggesting it might be labeled as an ‘Ultra’ model.
Both the standard and Pro iPhone models will incorporate a new ‘U2’ ultra-wideband chip, marking the first upgrade to this component since the introduction of the U1 chip in the iPhone 11 Pro in 2019. This new chip is poised to enhance location accuracy, enabling more precise tracking of people and devices within the Find My app, and it is expected to be integrated into all upcoming Apple products. Another notable improvement across the entire iPhone lineup will be faster wireless charging speeds and a more repair-friendly design.
Gurman reaffirmed several earlier rumors, including the inclusion of the Dynamic Island, A16 Bionic chip, and a 48-megapixel primary camera in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. He also mentioned the periscope telephoto camera with a potential 6x optical zoom for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
