Google has entered the premium laptop segment with Googlebook, a new AI-focused laptop platform designed specifically with Android users in mind. The company is putting its Gemini AI ecosystem at the center of the experience, while also focusing on deeper integration between Android smartphones and laptops.
Google announced the new Googlebook lineup on September 21. The initial models are being developed in partnership with laptop manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. According to Google, the laptops will be powered by Intel and Qualcomm processors, with select models offering up to 14 hours of battery life.
Googlebook starts at $899. Buyers will receive a 12-month Google AI Pro subscription, which includes 5TB of cloud storage and access to Gemini Advanced tools. The bundle also includes three months of YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop and access to some other services.
The first Googlebook models are expected to become available on October 4 and October 5 in select markets, including the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia. Preorders are already open. However, Google has not yet announced when the Googlebook lineup will be available in India or other markets.
Googlebook Marks Google’s Push Into the Premium Laptop Market
With Googlebook, Google is moving beyond the traditional Chromebook category and attempting to establish a presence in the premium laptop segment. The launch comes as Apple is also focusing on the more affordable laptop market with its Rs 79,900 MacBook Neo.
Chromebooks have traditionally been popular among students and budget-conscious users because of their affordability and simple user experience. Googlebook builds on that concept with more powerful hardware, advanced AI capabilities and deeper connectivity with Android smartphones.
Google has previously attempted to establish a premium ChromeOS laptop category with products such as the Pixelbook, launched in 2017, and the Pixelbook Go, introduced in 2019.
According to Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem at Google, the company’s goal is to rethink the laptop experience by bringing together the capabilities of ChromeOS and Android. The initial focus is on delivering a seamless and connected laptop experience for Android phone users.
Googlebook Designed for Android Users
Google is positioning Googlebook as the next step beyond Chromebooks. The platform brings together Chrome, Google Play apps and an AI-focused operating system to provide users with smarter assistance and a more seamless experience across devices.
Built using the Android technology stack alongside the desktop capabilities of ChromeOS, Googlebook is designed to work closely with Android smartphones.
After setting up the device and signing in with a Google account, users will be able to transfer their Android phone’s settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks and messages to Googlebook. Google says this data is protected with end-to-end encryption.
The platform also allows users to switch between their smartphone and laptop more easily and continue their work across devices.
Googlebook Specifications and Security Features
Googlebook models use premium materials such as aluminum, magnesium alloy and carbon fiber. Depending on the model, users can get displays with resolutions of up to 2.8K OLED, along with haptic glass trackpads and backlit keyboards.
For performance, Googlebook laptops use Intel and Qualcomm processors paired with dedicated NPUs capable of delivering more than 45 TOPS of AI performance. Google says the laptops can offer up to 14 hours of battery life.
What Is Glowbar?
One of Googlebook’s distinctive design features is Glowbar, a light strip located on the exterior of the laptop. It illuminates when the device starts up and can also indicate the battery level.
Users can customize Glowbar with different animations when interacting with Gemini.
Security is another key part of the Googlebook experience. The laptops include features such as Google Titan hardware root of trust and on-device malware detection.
Googlebook also comes with a Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor. According to Google, it represents an early use of this type of technology in the laptop category. The system provides an isolated Linux environment with full terminal access.
Developers can use this environment to run Linux development tools, access code repositories and work with autonomous AI agents.
Gemini AI Brings New Features to Googlebook
Googlebook includes several Gemini-powered features designed to make everyday tasks easier and more efficient.
These tools can help users draft and organize text, ask questions about content displayed on the screen, use Android phone apps in desktop windows and continue tasks that were started on a smartphone.
The built-in Files app also works closely with Android phones, allowing users to browse, search and open files and photos stored on their smartphones directly from the laptop.
What Does Magic Pointer Do?
Magic Pointer is one of Googlebook’s key AI features. It is an AI-powered cursor that analyzes the content on the screen and provides context-aware suggestions and actions.
For example, it can assist with tasks such as scheduling meetings or visualizing design concepts.
Google has also introduced Create Your Widget, which allows users to create custom dashboards using natural-language prompts. These widgets can work with connected Google services such as Gmail and Google Calendar.
Rambler and Antigravity Coming to Googlebook
Googlebook will also support Rambler, a feature the company introduced at this year’s Made by Google event.
Rambler can automatically organize a user’s spoken words into action items, headings and checklists. The feature also supports multiple languages.
For developers, Googlebook will offer Antigravity, Google’s AI agent development platform. According to the company, developers will have access to a full terminal environment where they can run tools such as Claude Code and Antigravity CLI.
This will allow developers to work more easily on AI agents and advanced agent-based coding projects.
