Today, Mithun Chakraborty is regarded as one of the most recognisable stars of Hindi cinema. However, behind his successful career lies a difficult story that many people may find hard to imagine. There was a time when the actor struggled to find a place to stay in Mumbai and even faced difficulties arranging money for food.
Mithun began his film career with Mrigayaa and won a National Award for his performance. Despite achieving such an important milestone early in his career, his life did not change overnight. Even after receiving the award, he struggled to find regular acting work and continued to face financial difficulties.
There were times when he danced at private parties simply in exchange for a meal. On other occasions, he had to spend the night on a footpath. He even had to turn his first car into a temporary home. These difficult experiences eventually became an important part of the journey that led him to become one of Bollywood’s biggest stars.
Recently, filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan visited Mithun Chakraborty at his Mumbai home. During their conversation, the actor opened up about some of the most challenging periods of his early life.
Mithun Danced at Parties in Exchange for Food
While discussing Mithun’s early struggles, Farah Khan revealed that she had heard about his difficult days since she was young.
Farah’s uncle, KK Shukla, was associated with the film industry and had also worked on films involving Amitabh Bachchan. During those days, Mithun would sometimes be invited to parties at their home.
He would perform for the guests, but he did not ask for any payment. At that stage of his life, getting a meal was more important than earning money.
According to Farah, people knew that Mithun was a talented dancer, so they would invite him to perform at their gatherings. He would dance without charging a fee and would receive food in return.
Farah pointed out that people often use the word “struggle” casually when describing difficult periods in someone’s life. However, she said Mithun’s experience represented a much more intense form of hardship.
Mithun also agreed, suggesting that simply calling those years a struggle would not fully describe what he went through.
When Footpaths and Gardens Became Mithun’s Sleeping Places
Mithun Chakraborty recalled a period when he had no permanent place to live in Mumbai.
He spent nights in different locations, including gardens and on footpaths. At times, exhaustion would become so overwhelming that he would fall asleep while walking.
When he woke up, he would realise that he had spent the night on a footpath.
Farah Khan highlighted how unusual Mithun’s journey was. He started his career as a junior artist and gradually established himself in the film industry before eventually becoming a major superstar.
The contrast between his difficult early years and the immense popularity he achieved later makes his journey particularly remarkable.
The Fashion Style That Was Once Mocked Later Became a Trend
Farah Khan also praised Mithun’s fashion sense and described him as a style icon.
During their meeting, Mithun was dressed in a black bandhgala, a muffler, black trousers, a cap and studded shoes.
Farah recalled that Mithun and Govinda were once mocked for their unconventional fashion choices. Over time, however, many of those styles became part of mainstream fashion.
She pointed out that several celebrities and fashion personalities now draw inspiration from the looks that Mithun and Govinda had popularised decades ago. Similar influences can also be seen in the fashion choices of Bollywood stars such as Ranveer Singh and Karan Johar.
According to Farah, Mithun was well ahead of his time, particularly during the Disco Dancer era, when his outfits and overall appearance were quite distinctive.
Mithun Had to Live in His Car Even After Winning the National Award
The story of Mithun’s first car is one of the most emotional reminders of his early struggles.
When Farah Khan visited his home, she noticed a yellow Volkswagen Beetle and asked whether the family still used it or had preserved it as a memory.
Mithun’s son Namashi explained that the car holds a special place in the family.
He revealed that Mithun completed his studies at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 1975 and made his film debut the following year. Despite winning a National Award for Mrigayaa, however, he continued to struggle to find regular work.
Since he did not have a home in Mumbai, Mithun reportedly spent around 15 days living inside the car.
His other son, Mimoh, explained that the Volkswagen Beetle was not merely a vehicle during that period. It became his father’s temporary home, where he would also sleep.
Even taking care of basic needs was difficult. According to the family, Mithun would clean and mop a nearby gym, and in return, he was allowed to use its shower.
Today, the same Beetle is around 50 years old, and the family has carefully preserved it.
Why Mithun Started a Hotel in Ooty
Mithun Chakraborty eventually enjoyed a highly successful acting career, but the early 1990s brought another period of uncertainty.
The actor revealed that he started a hotel business in Ooty in 1994. He later expanded his hospitality business to other locations, including Bengaluru.
Farah Khan asked why he felt the need to enter the hotel industry despite already being a successful actor.
Mithun explained that his film career had become unpredictable at that time. While some of his films were successful, others failed to connect with audiences. This made him worry about what he would do if his acting career suddenly came to an end.
He already had three children and wanted to provide his family with financial security. He also did not want his children to experience the difficult circumstances that he had gone through himself.
His wife, Yogeeta Bali, suggested that the family move to Ooty and manage the hotel.
Mithun believed that his popularity could help attract customers to the property. The decision eventually worked out, and the hotel performed well.
Around the same period, Mithun’s acting career also began gaining momentum again.
The family developed a close connection with Ooty. Their daughter was born there, while their other children attended school in the hill town.
Mithun’s Hotel Became a Special Location for Bollywood Films
Mithun’s hotel in Ooty also developed a connection with the Bollywood film industry.
Farah Khan revealed that she had stayed at the property during the shooting of films such as Dil Se and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
During their conversation, Farah described the hotel as a “lucky” place for Mithun. The actor agreed with her in a light-hearted manner.
He said several film teams that stayed at the hotel for their shoots later saw their movies perform successfully at the box office.
As a result, the hotel became more than just a source of income for Mithun. It also became associated with several well-known Bollywood productions and memorable film shoots.
19 Mithun Chakraborty Films Released in One Year
There was a period in Mithun Chakraborty’s career when he became known for completing films at an exceptionally fast pace.
He explained that while he could spend as much as six months preparing for a character, the actual filming could sometimes be completed in less than a month.
During one particularly busy year, as many as 19 of his films were released.
Mithun also recalled that his remarkable workload and record of continuously working in films earned him recognition in the Limca Book of Records.
His ability to work on multiple projects and deliver films at a rapid pace made him one of the busiest actors of that era.
From Mrigayaa to Becoming the ‘Disco King’
Mithun Chakraborty made his Bollywood debut with Mrigayaa in 1976. His performance in the film was widely appreciated and earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor.
However, winning the award did not immediately lead to a steady flow of films. His commercial success and popularity grew several years later.
The 1979 film Suraksha helped him gain greater recognition among mainstream audiences. Then came Disco Dancer in 1982, which became a major turning point in his career.
Following the film’s success, Mithun became widely known as the “Disco King.” He gained enormous popularity across India and established himself as one of the country’s leading film stars.
However, his career went through a challenging phase in the early 1990s. During this period, he expanded his interests beyond acting and entered the hotel business to create an additional source of financial security.
